Jeff Hanneman Dead at Age 49

I don't really have the word to put together about the passing of Jeff Hanneman. Without a doubt, one of the greatest guitarists and songwriters in the history of metal who will leave a gaping hole in our community for years to come.
Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.
Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 - 2013)
A quick post on the Slayer Facebook page but an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of their fans. When I started my show almost a decade ago, I had one thing in mind, Essential Slayer. There was and always has been one metal band who was able to bridge the extreme metal gap, integral to our art, our culture, our everything, and a huge piece of that is now gone. May he rest in metal with so many other greats who went before him, Dio, Mike Scaccia, Chuck Schuldiner, Dimebag...peace be with you Jeff Hanneman, we are metal for you, your legacy will always live on.

Slayer get the Jager treatment

I have to admit, I am not surprised that Kerry King likes Jagermeister, but I am surprised that any company saw the potential of a metal band to sell their product. I think that Jager definitely knows their audience in a way most retail brands tend to forget. Offering Slayer a 'seat at the table' is a perfect match for both Jager and Slayer. Plus the added video interview with King is probably the most I have ever heard him talk about the band in an interview in ten years...

Slayer's Hanneman to Sit Out Mayhem Fest

If you were expecting to see the full line up of Slayer on this year's Mayhem festival you might have to wait another cycle. In a statement on Slayer's website today the announcement has been made that Jeff Hanneman will be sidelined for this summer's tour due to the lingering effects of that spider bite he suffered and Gary Holt will remain to fill in his slot on tour, but not in the studio.
Slayer fans everywhere - it's time to let you know what is going on with our brother Jeff Hanneman.
As you know, Jeff was bitten by a spider more than a year ago, but what you may not have known was that for a couple of days after he went to the ER, things were touch-and-go. There was talk that he might have to have his arm amputated, and we didn't know if he was going to pull through at all. He was in a medically-induced coma for a few days and had several operations to remove the dead and dying tissue from his arm.
So, understand, he was in really, really bad shape. It's been about a year since he got out of the hospital, and since then, he had to learn to walk again, he's had several painful skin grafts, he's been in rehab doing exercises to regain the strength in his arm; but best of all, he's been playing guitar. We were all excited when he joined us onstage for the encore a year ago at The Big Four show at Coachella. Since then, we've given him all the time and support he's needed to continue his rehab so he can come back to the band fully recovered and able to deliver the kind of shows we all want him to.
While Jeff's been doing some writing and has been coming to rehearsal over the past several weeks, he has decided he needs to take more time to continue his rehab. While we want him back onstage with the band, all of us support his decision. So, we're very grateful that Gary Holt will continue to fill in for Jeff, and will tour with us until Jeff completes his rehab and is ready to return. How long will that be? The best and most honest answer we can give you is 'as long as it takes.'
We also wanted you to know that we've been doing some writing and recording for the next Slayer album - we've tracked a few songs, and will finish the album when we're off the road later this year. Gary will join us on tour in Europe and the UK in May and June, and then we'll all see you on this Summer's Mayhem Festival
It doesn't really matter what he is doing, we just wish him a speedy recovery and what is best for his overall health at this point.

Cannibal Corpse Infests Slayer

As if Slayer could get more metal, somehow they just did. The addition of Cannibal Corpses guitarist Pat O'brien to the line up as a fill in for Jeff Hanneman on the european leg of their tour. Those duties have been up to Exodus' Gary Holt, but now he must rejoin his band for some dates in South America, and has to be swapped out.

Hanneman has made a speedy recovery from an infection thought to have been caused by a spider bite. Following surgery on his right arm, he continues his physical therapy and has already been practicing with his guitar.
