NO CONTROL Radio Replay 12/27/13 - Best of 2013

2013 was an amazing year for metal, one of the best in the past three decades and I try and cram in all the best into one show this week. The best album? Carcass of course, but the rest of the three hours filled with goodness from Black Dahlia Murder, Dillinger Escape Plan, Clutch, Revocation, Cult of Luna, Deafheaven, Battlecross, Fleshgod Apocalypse and more!

Thank you for an excellent year and I look forward to a great 2014!

ALL CONTESTS ARE OVER and REQUEST LINES ARE CLOSED, listen live on Friday nights at 10p CST on 101X, 93.3 KGSR HD3 and online at www.nocontrolradio.com

Record Store Day - Metal List

So I am a huge fan of Record Store Day, and record stores in general. If I went back and added up the amount of cash paid to buy albums, CDs, cassettes and so on over the year for my personal and radio use, I would probably be able to pay off my credit card debt. Instead I plan to add a little more to it on the third weekend in April every year.

This year though, the metal releases and specials for 4/20 are kind of bleak, but don't be afraid to buy other stuff that would typically be on the waiting list any other time. The record industry is floundering, but the music will never die...check the full list on the RSD site!

SXSW Metal Sunday 3/17/13

I used to play in the SXSW softball game, until the hangover and inevitable shin splints took hold a few years ago, so now I usually sleep in, then stay in bed all day, but this year going to try and make at least some effort to come by this excellent local showcase. not to mention the St Patty's Day people watching is always kind of incredible...

SXSW Metal Saturday 3/16/13 (updated)

I have given up all hope of making it through this day alive. It doesn't seem to matter how much water, or advil I take, I can't shake the hangover, but I feel like I need more music. My body says NO but my mind says YES!

Saturday morning the regret starts to set in that you didn't want to walk the extra 8 blocks to see your favorite band who you just found out played all the songs you wanted to hear. It is the stench of the open dumpster behind Valhalla. But we must continue to carry on...almost there...

Saturday has some good showcases, and no I don't know the venue for the Smashing Pumpkins, stop texting me

SXSW Metal Friday 3/15/13 (updated)

The pure destructive power of alcohol and sleep deprivation weighs heavy on your soul Friday morning. You begin to think that maybe all of this partying will not serve you well in the future and think about your poor poor liver screaming for vengeance as you try to live past fifty. All that is not important right now, just know that it gets worse the older and grumpier you get. A good pair of jogging shoes, a bike and a sh-tload of water will be the only way you will survive the next couple of days.

Friday of SXSW Music is not about looking cool, it is about keeping the swamp ass at bay and struggling to not pickle yourself, remember, this is a marathon not a sprint and treat it as such! That being said...where is the free booze? Many tough choices on the schedule today, but life is full of those as I outlined above.

Look for a couple different items, panels, discussions, and of course Flatstock too!!

SXSW Metal Thursday 3/14/13

Thursday, in years past, typically has the biggest metal day parties and showcases stacked altogether in one jam packed insane 20 hour block. This year, Thursday is a little on the weak side, at least on the metal party side of things. Nothing wrong with a little break in the action, sleep in a little bit, get some work done at the office and get ready for the Metal Sucks Showcase at the Dirty Dog.

SXSW Metal Wednesday 3/13/13

Wednesday is when the music really gets rolling. I have my badge and am ready to conquer SXSW 2013. Well, if by conquer you mean find free booze and BBQ while watching brutal metal, then yes, that is what I am after.

The Pitchfork show is most likely where I will be starting my day, Encrust kills it and Skeletonwitch is one of the best live bands I have ever seen and I missed their last show at Red7 so I am in on that, and then of course probably slide into Hoek's Metal Fest, (apparently now cancelled or moved - check the link!) and on to showcases during the night.

SXSW Metal Tuesday 3/12/13

I have been attending SXSW for seventeen years in a row now and it seems to get going earlier every single year. Not only do we get Interactive, Film and EDU, now the showcases and music parties start on Tuesday for the Music portion of the conference. Granted a little slow, but we have a bit of metal to get things rolling on Tuesday.

Be sure you are planning ahead for parking, that is always the biggest bitch during this week. It is the only time I ever pay to park downtown since I can leave my car in a garage all day. I took my bike with me last year to get around and it was the best thing I had ever done. Be ready for huge crowds already!

SXSW Metal 2013 - The List (Updated 3/12)

Ok, so I am sticking with this as the official SXSW post for the metals. This weekend I will go day by day and try and give you a little more detail into what each show will have, cost, if you need a badge etc. If you have anything I missed you can send it over chuck@krox.com and keep tabs, I will adjust the title as I update and keep it on the top of the blog so you don't have to read any of my other crap...

Also I will begin with the Hoek's Metal Fest, which, I can't type all the bands out, so the flier should do you well. It is a great stop gap for any space in your schedule!

Metal Alliance Dates Announced: No Central TX?

It had been previously announced that Anthrax would headline the third annual Metal Alliance Tour, set to kick off in March and run through the month of April. The band will perform its fan-favorite 1987 album "Among The Living" in its entirety during the trek, which will feature support from Exodus, Municipal Waste, Holy Grail and a couple of additional bands, to be announced at a later date. Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian said:

"Holy crap am I so excited about this year's Metal Alliance Tour!

It's been a great year and a half for us since 'Worship Music' came out and to cap it off with a Grammy nomination.

This is such a perfect lineup. To make this tour even more special, we will be playing our 'Among The Living' record in its entirety. I can't wait to play 'Horror Of It All'!

Come on out and worship with us, my friends. You do not want to miss this. USA on Hell one more time."
